Safer People, Safer Streets

This report is a summary of the U.S. Department of Transportation Action Plan to Increase Walking and Biking and Reduce Pedestrian and Bicyclist Fatalities.  This initiative will include new research and tools to improve safety, generate better data on pedestrian and bicycle activity, crashes, and infrastructure, and build stronger partnerships between DOT headquarters and others in the field.

NSW Cycling Safety Action Plan 2014-2016

The NSW Cycling Safety Action Plan has been developed to help make bicycle riding a safer form of transport. The plan supports the goals of the NSW Road Safety Strategy 2012-2021 to reduce deaths and serious injuries by at least 30 per cent.

Western Australia Bike Network Plan 2014-31

The Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031 (WABN Plan) covers a range of activities that aim to provide a safe and sustainable cycling network which ties in with key activity and attraction areas. The WABN Plan succeeds the 1996 Perth Bicycle Network Plan and links in with the National Cycling Strategy 2011-2016: gearing up for active and sustainable communities (Austroads Ltd 2010).

Bayside City Council Bicycle Strategy

The City of Bayside in Victoria adopted their Bicycle Strategy 2013 - 2019 in December 2013. The strategy sets Council's direction for the development of the bicycle network within the municipality and identifies Council's position in encouraging and supporting more cycling within the Bayside community.

Sydney’s Cycling Future: Cycling for everyday transport

This plan from the NSW Government supports the change in culture seen in Sydney with more people choosing to ride a bike for transport.  The focus is on the 70 per cent of NSW residents who say they would like to ride a bike more for everyday transport – and would do so if cycling was made a safer and more convenient option for them.

Active Travel Act 2013 (Wales)

The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013 is landmark Welsh law to make it easier for people to walk and cycle in Wales.  The Act makes it a legal requirement for local authorities in Wales to map and plan for suitable routes for active travel, and to build and improve their infrastructure for walking and cycling every year.

German National Cycling Plan 2020 (Published in English)

The German National Cycling Plan 2020 presents the German Federal Government's political commitment to promote cycling as part of sustainable transport development. The strategy addresses all levels of Government and works to promote cycling and incease the cycling mode share of trips up to 15% of all trips by 2020.

Briefing on the Government’s Ambition for Cycling

The UK Department of Transport has released a report outlining their ambition for cycling.  The report covers infrastructure, education and a range of other important initiatives.  A key component of the UK's strategy is to invest in the next generation of bicycle enthusiasts through their Bikeability education program.  This program teaches children how to cycle safely, confidently and competently on the road and is an essential component of building a successful bicycle culture in the future.
