Mon 11th Nov 2013

In November 2013 the Australian Bicycle Council published Implementation Report 2012 which outlines the progress made on the National Cycling Strategy in 2012.

In this second year of the National Cycling Strategy 2011-16:

  • Australian states and territories invested $97.5 million in cycling related infrastructure, education and promotion in 2011-12.
  • Bicycles outsold cars for the 13th year running with over 1.3 million bicycles sold in the 2011-12 year.
  • There was a 15% increase in the number of trips made to work by bicycle between the 2006 and 2011 census.
  • Governments at both state and commonwealth levels are integrating bicycle planning into all transport policy.  The bicycle is increasingly being seen as an essential mode of transport to be considered alongside pedestrians, trains, buses, cars, ferries etc.
