The role of traffic violations in police-reported bicycle crashes in Queensland

The study examined the role of traffic violations in the 6,774 police-reported bicycle crashes in Queensland between January 2000 and December 2008. Of the 6,328 crashes involving bicycles and motor vehicles, cyclists were deemed to be at fault in 44.4% of the incidents.

Cyclists’ perception of risk in roundabouts

This research, undertaken in Denmark, found that underestimation of risk and lack of knowledge about relevant traffic rules may contribute to car–bicycle collisions in roundaboutsCyclists prefer road designs with a clear regulation of road user behaviour. A need to increase knowledge about traffic rules regulating road user behaviour in roundabouts is identified.

Car Driver and Bicyclist Behavior at Bicycle Crossings Under Different Priority Regulations

This 1999 study examines the effects of changes to the Finnish Traffic Code concerning rights of way at bicycle crossings put into effect on the first of June, 1997.  It looks at changes in drivers’ and cyclists’ behavior, and on their knowledge.

The role of alcohol in nonfatal bicycle injuries

This research paper was published in Accident Analysis & Prevention in 1990. It found that alcohol increased the bicyclist's risk of injury from falling more than from collision. As an unprotected road user, an inebriated bicyclist greatly increases his own risk of injury but seldom causes danger to other road users.

This report is a review of the literature on cyclists who ride in large groups or bunches on public roads. The aims of the review were to understand the behaviour of bunch riders, particularly the behaviours that may contribute to increased risk of collision and to make recommendations for effective enforcement and countermeasure strategies for this road user group.
